Castle Trakošćan is a place of great importance that gives its visitors an insight into rich Croatian history.

Trakošćan was built at the end of the 13th century as a part of the defense system of northwestern Croatia, as a smaller observation fortress.
According to the legend, Trakošćan got its name from a fort (arx Thacorum), which allegedly existed in antiquity. The second preserved text tells us that it was named after the Drachenstein knights who ruled these regions in the early Middle Ages.
During the flowering period of the construction of castles in Hrvatsko Zagorje, in the second half of the 18th century, Trakošćan was left abandoned. It begins to decay rapidly, and until the middle of the 19th century, in the spirit of a new era, romantic return to nature and family traditions, Juraj V. Drašković rebuilds the castle into a residential mansion and transforms the park environment into a romanticism park. The next generation is temporarily residing in Trakošćan until 1944 when they left for Austria and soon after that the castle is nationalized.
In 1954 a permanent exhibition was established. Today it is owned by the Republic of Croatia.
Trakošćan is one of the few buildings in Croatia with its preserved heritage, historically closely linked to the architectural framework and life of its owner or family Drašković.
The museum has valuable museum artefacts from the period of Renaissance to historicism, which is divided into several collections:
